Sterling County is now accepting applications for Justice of the Peace Clerk.

This position is part-time with a maximum of 29 hours per week.
 
Job Description:
Primary Responsibilities:
• Court Administration:
• Prepare, file, and maintain court documents such as summonses, warrants, affidavits, and judgments.
• Schedule hearings and maintain the court calendar.
• Record and document court proceedings.
• Swear in witnesses and administer oaths.
• Clerical Support to the JP:
• Assist the Justice of the Peace with documentation during court sessions.
• Prepare dockets and legal forms for the JP’s review and signature.
• Ensure proper handling of legal filings, motions, and orders.
• Customer Service / Public Interaction:
• Respond to inquiries from attorneys, law enforcement, and the public.
• Provide information about court processes, hearing dates, and case statuses.
• Accept and process payments for fines, fees, and court costs.
• Records and Data Management:
• Input case information into legal databases and tracking systems.
• Ensure accuracy and confidentiality of legal records.
• Prepare reports or transcripts as needed.

Skills & Qualifications:
• Strong knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in recordkeeping.
• Proficiency in legal or office software (e.g., case management systems, Microsoft Office).
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and work under pressure.

• Prior experience in a legal office, courthouse, or administrative role is advantageous.
• Familiarity with local or state laws and procedures governing JP courts.

Work Environment:
• Typically works in a courthouse, JP office, or municipal building.
• May require occasional attendance in courtroom proceedings.
• May involve interaction with the public, law enforcement officers, and legal professionals.
